Detective Thomas Curley
Senior Corporal
Wilmington Department of Police
Chief of Police
Chief Michael J. Szczerba
During the year of 2007, Detective Curley investigated an array of felony crimes entailing homicide, robberies, assaults, and burglaries, while demonstrating fine analytical skills, patience, persistence and the ability to tackle obstacles which often hamper investigations. The challenges involved overall, lack of cooperation amongst witnesses, victims, insufficient evidence and an attitude where persons do not want to snitch but handle matters themselves subsequently leading to more violence. Below is are some highlights of Detective Curley's cases which illustrate his outstanding investigative abilities.
*** On 10/27/07, police were summoned to the 2800 Block of NE Blvd., and encountered an uncooperative victim who sustained two gun shot wounds. After several attempts, he informed police of his name but refused to elaborate on what had occurred. In addition, two other victims were shot and one later succumbed to his gun shot wounds and died. Prior to the police's arrival, many witnesses fled. When police arrived, there were a few individuals who appeared intoxicated and were unable to provide adequate suspects' information. The only viable lead was that a white vehicle pulled quickly out of the parking lot. Since there were very few known witnesses, Detective Curley had the arduous tasks of tracking down unknown potential witnesses and reconstructing what had occurred. All available surveillance camera images were fuzzy and inclement weather hampered evidence collection efforts. No gun casings were found at the scene. Later that night, a white vehicle which sustained damage was found abandoned near 27th & Speakman Place. At this time, police were unsure if it was connected to the homicide. About three hours later, a male subject reported a car-jacking near the Thunderguard Club. During his interview, he claimed his brother and two other females were approached by 6 male subjects who wanted to purchase drugs. He claimed that one of the subjects was armed and fired his weapon at him. The alleged victim then instructed his brother and the two females to flee. After conducting many hours of research, Detective Curley obtained several names for the potential female witnesses. In addition, his investigation revealed that the three shooting victims had been at a restaurant earlier before going to the Thunderguard Club. One of the initial uncooperative shooting victims told Detective Curley that he went up to a white Dodge Charger to buy drugs from the passenger. In addition, this victim saw his friend who died, Dorian Hardy talking to a subject outside the vehicle when gunfire erupted from the rear of the vehicle. This victim's account was collaborated with the two female witnesses located inside the white vehicle. The alleged car-jacking victim's brother was re-interviewed and he confirmed that his brother had a firearm and utilized it on the night of the homicide. In addition, the suspect's identity, Terrance Taylor was ascertained through evidentiary items left inside the Dodge Charger and several witness photographic line-ups. The suspect was arrested for murder, attempted murder, assault and weapon-related offenses. Detective Curley expended over 100 hours of investigative hours, along with dealing with uncooperative shooting victims and identifying and tracking down several witnesses who fled the scene.
*** Another case which demonstrates Detective Curley's fine investigative skills entails an Attempted Murder case which occurred on 11/3/06 at 8th & Monroe Streets. A male subject had sustained a gunshot wound to the back of his head. Through his investigation, Detective Curley interviewed the victim and multiple witnesses several times. His investigative efforts were hampered since the victim moved around a lot and did not inform him of his addresses. Through persistence, the victim was located and he subsequently identified the driver of the fleeing car and the shooter. In addition, the driver confirmed the shooter's identity. The suspect was arrested on 11/7/07 and in addition he was implicated in another shooting and several other cases of witness intimidation. A dangerous felon was removed for the street.
*** On 2/21/07, the Citizens' Bank at 1422 N. DuPont was robbed where the suspect wrote a note advising bank personnel he had a gun. Detective Curley solicited the media outlets for assistance. A citizen provided a possible name and it yielded a successful outcome. However, the suspect, Edwin Rivas fled to Virginia to avoid apprehension. Detective Curley tracked him down and solicited the assistance of local Virginia authorities. He interviewed Rivas in Virginia where Rivas confessed and was later extradited to Delaware.
*** On 7/3/06, a nine year old was grazed by gunfire in the 300 Block of E. 9th Street. An investigation revealed that a resident hosted a party of 100 children or more. An argument broke out amongst rival groups which spilled upon the streets. Detective Curley secured a nickname through a subject he knew from his assignment as a School Resource Officer. What makes this case unique is that 9 year old child's father had been arrested by Detective Curley and was sentenced to 24 years of incarceration. Curley delicately handled this case and two juveniles were charged with Reckless Endangering 1st, CCDW, and Conspiracy. ***
On7/6/06, Detective Curley investigated a shooting where the victim sustained a fractured femur within the 300 Block of E. 9th Street. The innocent victim thought the suspect had a nickname of "Peanut". Through his investigative efforts, the intended target was identified and linked to an earlier altercation which occurred on 7/4/06. After the July 4th incident, the suspect allegedly solicited the help of others who live in Philadelphia to shoot the victim. Detective Curley was able to collaborate this information through a variety of sources and witnesses. The suspect telephoned a subject, gave him directions and ordered him to shoot up the 300 Block of East 9th Street. Unfortunately an innocent victim was caught in the cross fire. On 9/21/07 an arrest warrant was generated for the outstanding suspect for Assault 1st, Assault 2nd, Possession of Deadly Weapon and Conspiracy.
On 9/19/07, Detective Thomas Curley was assigned a burglary which occurred at 300 East 8th Street between September 16-19, 2007. While conducting a property check a subject was found inside the premises. During an investigation a search warrant was executed and various construction tools and items were located at room being rented by the suspect. After being given his Miranda warnings, the suspect confessed to the crimes and advised that he had been in the building several times and removed property belonging to Pettinaro Construction. The suspect, Edward Dupree was charged with Burglary 3rd, Possession of Burglary Tools, Criminal Mischief and Theft Over.
On 4/1/07, Detective Curley investigated an attempted robbery in the 1100 Block of D Street. During the robbery, three suspects injured the victim with a paintball gun but were unable to obtain his property. The victim believed he may have known the victim from going to school with him. Detective Curley researched his claim and was able to identify the first suspect. Three search warrants were executed and all three robbery suspects were identified and charged with Attempted Robbery 1st and Conspiracy 2nd Degree. *** Furthermore, during the calendar year of 2007, Detective Thomas Curley has secured convictions in three separate Superior Court Trials. Defendant Lamar Rogers received at least 11 years for a home invasion where an eight month pregnant women was injured. Defendant Vaughn King was convicted of a robbery of a blind victim and Anthony White was sentenced to 24 years of incarceration for shooting a 13 year old boy.
